Acidic pools can cause dental problems

It seems like there is no end in sight for the high temperatures, and many Austinites are jumping into pools to cool off. But in one man’s case, swimming in his backyard nearly destroyed the enamel on his teeth. A 52 year-old man swam in his backyard for 90 minutes a day and over a five-month span, saw extreme enamel loss, increased tooth sensitivity, and dark staining.

Dentists were stumped for months for what could have caused such rapid enamel loss. Eventually, his dentists asked for him to test the acidity levels in his swimming pool. The man discovered that his pool had an acidity level between 2.7 and 7; average pool acidity levels are 7.2 to 7.8. While this man’s case was particularly severe, it’s not uncommon for dental professionals to see patients experience enamel erosion due to swimming pools. To make sure your family’s swimming pool is safe, always check the chlorine and acidity levels at least on a weekly basis. If you or someone you love is experiencing severe dental damage or pain, contact the Austin dental emergency professionals at BridgeView Dental today by calling 512-347-8299.
