Elderly dental health tips

As people get older, their teeth will age with them, typically increasing the number of dental problems older people face and making tooth care at older ages even more important.

The elderly usually suffer from dental problems such as tooth loss, gum disease, decaying of root, tooth stains, and dry mouth. It is best advised that older adults should brush their teeth using a soft gentle bristle brush twice a day, in addition to using floss regularly to remove food between teeth. In order to avoid cavities, elderly people are recommended to drink fluoridated tap water instead of bottled water.

Additionally, elderly people tend to have more dental prosthetics, such as dentures and dental bridges. These prosthetics should always be kept in proper condition to prevent them from damaging the gums and teeth, and food with high sugar and starches should be limited.

If you are an older adult in need of specialized care, our dentists at Bridgeview Dental can provide it. Schedule a consultation by calling 512-347-8299.
