Energy drinks are more popular than ever across the United States. And while there is some debate over if these drinks even work or are healthy, there is very little debate amongst dental professionals regarding energy drinks and your teeth. Dentists across the country are warning people of all ages to stay away from energy drinks, claiming they can cause the decay of tooth enamel more than any other drink, including sports drink and even coffee.
Due to the large amount of acid and sugar in energy drinks, they can wear down the enamel in your teeth. If you have any questions about energy drinks and your teeth or how to care for your teeth to prevent the wearing down of enamel, contact an Austin dentist of BridgeView Dental today at 512-347-8299 and schedule an appointment.
How We Can Help
Although you can harden enamel again through mineralization, it is impossible to replace enamel once it is lost. A recent study published in General Dentistry reported that tooth enamel erodes twice as much from energy drinks compared to sports drinks. Dental professionals suggest the following to protect your enamel:
- If possible, avoid drinking energy drinks
- If you do drink an energy drink, wash your mouth out with water as soon as possible
- After washing your mouth out, chew a piece of sugar-free gum to increase saliva production to combat the effect of acid
- Wait at least an hour after drinking an energy drink to brush your teeth.
If you brush immediately after drinking an energy drink, the friction of brushing will combine with the acid and erode enamel more quickly.
