Porcelain Inlays and Onlays in Austin

Porcelain inlays and onlays can restore teeth affected by mild to moderate tooth decay. Larger than a porcelain filling, but smaller than a crown, porcelain onlays can strengthen and restore the functionality of your tooth while preserving more of the natural tooth structure than a dental crown.

To find out if porcelain onlays are the right solution to blend your dental restoration seamlessly with your smile, please call BridgeView Dental today at (512) 265-5818 to schedule your appointment with Dr. Lance Loveless.

Porcelain Inlays and Onlays

What Are Porcelain Inlays and Onlays?

Porcelain inlays can be used to replace old metal fillings. They are generally limited to treating decay that is contained between the cusps of your tooth, whereas onlays are a restoration that extends into the chewing cusps of the tooth. Onlays are sometimes referred to as a “partial crown.”

Inlay and onlay restorations are suitable for a variety of restorations, including:

  • Broken or fractured teeth
  • Decayed teeth
  • Fractured fillings
  • Replacement of metal fillings
  • Cosmetic enhancement

At BridgeView Dental, our inlays and onlays are custom-crafted from the finest quality dental porcelain to ensure the strength and durability that you want in your tooth restoration.

What Are the Benefits of Inlays and Onlays?

Restoring your teeth with porcelain inlays and onlays offers many benefits, including:

  • Restoration of the structural integrity of the tooth for a strong, healthy bite
  • Prevention of more extensive damage from untreated decay, saving you from more extensive, costly treatments in the future
  • Preservation of more healthy tooth structure than dental crowns, extending the life of your natural tooth
  • Color-matched to blend seamlessly with your natural smile
  • Increased strength and durability for long-lasting tooth restoration

What Can You Expect from the Porcelain Inlay or Onlay Procedure?

Your customized treatment will be discussed with you during your initial consultation. However, in general, you can expect the porcelain onlay procedure to take two office visits.

During the first inlay or onlay appointment with Dr. Loveless, he will remove decay from the tooth and take an impression for the lab to create the inlay or onlay. The tooth will be thoroughly cleaned and carefully prepared to fit your onlay restoration. Then Dr. Loveless will place a temporary onlay on your tooth to protect it while your permanent restoration is made.

During the second inlay or onlay appointment, Dr. Loveless will precisely place and securely bond the custom-made inlay or onlay to your natural tooth structure. He may make a few adjustments to ensure a proper fit and comfortable bite.

Caring for your new dental restoration is as easy as caring for your natural teeth. Practice good oral hygiene daily, maintain a healthy diet, and keep your regularly scheduled dental care visits. With proper care, your new onlay can provide you with a long-lasting, beautifully restored smile.
